The former Bayern Munich midfielder warns the French team not to underestimate Germany and reveals his favorites for the Euro.

World champion in 2018, European runner-up in 2016, France will approach Euro 2020 with the ambition to win and achieve a double. Of course, Les Bleus are one of the favorites to win the title and they intend to assume this status. Nevertheless, France will have a lot to do to be crowned European champion and it will start with a first real test against Germany. In an interview with L’Equipe, Bastian Schweinsteiger warned Les Bleus about the difficulty of staying at the top level over time.

Germany – Timo Werner: “Benzema will not weaken France

“France can consider themselves lucky to have so many players of such quality. Mbappé, Kanté or Pogba are players who can certainly make a difference. At the base, there is a lot of individual quality. What can also become dangerous for Germany is that this generation now knows exactly how to win a title. But I’m looking forward to seeing if the team is still as hungry as it was at the 2018 World Cup. Keeping up after winning titles is not always easy. You have to stay on top of your game,” said the former Bayern Munich man.

“We have already met quite a few times. There is the Euro 2016 semi-final in Marseille, where we were eliminated. Germany-France, is always a classic, like Germany-England or Germany-Italy. At the 2014 World Cup, luck was on our side. We managed to find the right rhythm in the quarterfinals. During the tournament, we were already starting to see how good a team France was. The following years confirmed this even more, until today,” added Bastian Schweinsteiger.

“Who knows? Good results against France and Portugal can give the team momentum for the whole tournament.”

The 2014 world champion believes that Germany has a role to play in this European championship: “If all the players are fit and play in their best position, Germany will definitely be a force to be reckoned with. The return of Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels gives the team stability, they are leaders. We also have the best goalkeeper in the world, Manuel Neuer, who is a decisive factor.

“I think we shouldn’t underestimate Germany just because we haven’t been sovereign in the last few games, like in the 0-6 against Spain in the Nations League or in the 1-2 loss to North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifier. Who knows? Good results against France and Portugal may give the team momentum for the whole tournament. The quality is there in any case. The question is whether the Germans will show it on the pitch,” Schweinsteiger added.

The former Bayern Munich player revealed his favorites for Euro 2020: “Belgium and Spain are good teams, but England can also have a good tournament. The Netherlands also have great players, I think they will go far. But for me, France and Portugal are the big favorites for the Euro.”
