Gunfight between Bernard Lemaître and Julian Savea, Ngani Laumape calms the game

In his press conference at the end of the season, the president of Toulon Bernard Lemaître regretted the failed recruitment of a player “very, very impressive” because of the intervention of a former player of the RCT. Without naming them, he speaks here of Ngani Laumape, who would have signed in Paris after Julian Savea advised him against joining the Var. Savea’s answer is scathing to say the least.

In a press conference this Monday, during the assessment of the season of the RCT and the announcement of the recruits for next season, the president Bernard Lemaître came back on the absence of stars among the arrivals. A culture of recruiting stars that has long been the model Toulon, under the presidency Mourad Boudjellal.

On this subject, Lemâitre reveals that he tried to bring to the center “a very, very impressive player”. Without success. “I think we were in the clear given our proposal. But finally, not the player but probably his wife, preferred another city than Toulon as a living environment. This certainly influenced the player.” Without naming him, Lemaître is talking about the all black three-quarter Ngani Laumape (28 years old, 15 caps), who finally committed to Stade Francais, whose colors he will wear from next season.

Savea: “The reputation of RCT on the treatment it gives to its players speaks for itself

For Bernard Lemaître, another factor would have intervened in the choice of the player: the bad publicity made to the RCT by another All Black, Julian Savea (30 years, 54 caps), whose passage in the Var (2018-2020) will remain a failure. At his departure, Savea had not hidden to have little tasted his experience in the Var and would dissuade since his compatriots to join the RCT. Including Laumpape, therefore. On this subject, Lemaître slips: “Certain remarks made by one of his former All Black colleagues, who has left us, could have made him think. This player went elsewhere. We regret it because we did a huge amount of work to try to bring him in. ”

Alerted to these comments, which earned him some insults on social networks, Julian Savea reacted violently on his Twitter account: “I did not need to convince anyone not to sign for RCT. His reputation on how he treats his players speaks for itself, I don’t need to add to it.” In response, it was Laumape himself who stepped in to calm things down. “Julian told me only good things about Toulon. With my partner, we simply chose to experience life in Paris. There is no need for these hateful comments”.
