This Monday, in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Humbert was eliminated by Karatsev in two sets (7-5, 6-4), while Dimitrov also left the clay court tournament in a hurry, beaten by Harris (6-3, 3-6, 7-6).

As in Monte-Carlo three weeks ago, Ugo Humbert fell at the start of the tournament in Madrid and will not see the second round of a Masters 1000 clay court tournament this season. Facing Aslan Karatsev, the Frenchman was dominated in two sets (7-5, 6-4) and 1h32 of play. If the beginning of the match was rather balanced, the Frenchman then cracked at the end of the first set. After having already saved three break points at 4-4, the 32nd ranked player gave up at 5-5 on the fifth break point of the Russian, who then concluded the set without shaking.

With his back against the wall, Humbert was unable to worry the sensation of the early season. At 3-3, Karatsev took his opponent’s serve for a second time to win the set, after having to save the Frenchman’s only break point at 4-3 in his favor. With a second shutout to close out the match, the recent finalist in Belgrade has logically qualified for the next round, where he will face Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, the number 7 seed in Madrid. As with Millman in the Principality, Humbert was unable to exist and will try to do better in Rome for the last Masters 1000 of the year on the ochre surface.

Dimitrov, first seed to go out
In the other matches of the day, the first sensation of the tournament was Lloyd Harris. Against Grigor Dimitrov, the number 13 seed in this Masters 1000, the South African had to fight hard to win in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 7-6) and 2:28 of play. After two rather calm sets, the match got out of hand with numerous break points, but above all five match points saved by the Bulgarian. After a break at 2-1, the Bulgarian had to work hard to push the match back to 5-3 for Harris.

Down 0-40 on his serve, Dimitrov fought his way through to the tie-break, where both servers struggled to score points on their serves. Finally, it was on his sixth opportunity that the Cape Town native ended his opponent’s tournament, defeated in the first round. He will face Alex De Minaur in the next round. Meanwhile, John Isner defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in two sets (6-4, 7-6) and 1h21 of play to reach the second round, where he will face Roberto Bautista Agut or Marco Cecchinato. For his part, Reilly Opelka was surprised by Dominik Koepfer in two sets (6-4, 6-4) and 1h13 of play.
